Minutes
The meeting took place remotely using video conferencing software.
Date: Thursday 15th April 2021
Members present: Ms. Anne Vaughan (Chairperson), Ms. Eithne Fitzgerald, Mr. John Martin, Dr. Eimear Cotter, Mr. John Shaw, Mr. John McCarthy and Mr. Pádraig Dalton.
Apologies: Mr. Gerard Brady
Non-members in attendance: Mr. Paul Morrin, Mr. Richie McMahon (CSO Senior Management) and Ms. Claire Hanley (Secretary). Ms. Fiona O’Riordan (CSO) attended for item 3.
Item 1: Minutes of NSB meeting February 11, 2021
The minutes of the previous meeting were agreed.
Item 2: CSO Director General’s Report to NSB
The Director General briefed the Board on a number of recent developments within CSO. The Board welcomed the update and some issues were discussed further, these included:
Item 3: Social Data Collection
Fiona O’Riordan (CSO) presented the ongoing challenges and innovations in the area of social data collection at the CSO, which include the difficulties brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic and the changes to the collection process from 2021 onwards.
The Board welcomed the presentation and discussed some issues in further detail, these included:
Item 4: Update on NSB Strategy
The Board discussed the launch of the NSB Strategy for Official Statistics 2021-2026, due to take place at the end of May, and had an initial discussion on best practice for evaluating progress on the strategies’ recommendations and actions in the future.
The next meeting of the Board will take place on June 10, 2021.
The Board agreed on potential speakers to invite to future NSB meetings which included key producers/users of data such as large data holding Departments and addressing key themes such as Health.
A short discussion took place for non-CSO Board members.
