Minutes
The meeting took place in the CSO Office in Swords and was a hybrid meeting.
Date: Thursday 15th September 2022
Members present: Ms. Anne Vaughan (Chairperson), Ms. Eithne Fitzgerald, Dr. Eimear Cotter, Mr. John Martin, Mr. John Shaw* and Mr. Pádraig Dalton*.

Non-members in attendance: Paul Morrin, Richard McMahon (CSO Senior Management) and Ms. Claire Hanley (Secretary). Eileen Murphy, Cormac Halpin and Diarmuid Reidy (CSO) attended for item 3.

Item 1: Minutes of NSB meeting June 16, 2022 (NSB 2022-4-2)
The minutes of the previous meeting were agreed.
Item 2: CSO Director General’s Report to NSB (NSB 2022-4-3)
CSOs Director General, Pádraig Dalton, briefed the Board on a number of recent strategic developments relating to the priorities and actions set out in the NSBs Strategic Priorities for Official Statistics 2021-2026. Some issues were discussed further, these included:
Item 3: Census presentation and tour
Eileen Murphy, Diarmuid Reidy and Cormac Halpin (CSO Census senior managers) gave an overview of Census 2022 which included recruitment of staff at all levels; the publicity campaign and time capsule; new technology in the field and the use of smart phones; delivery and collection metrics; data protection; preliminary results for 2022 and vacant homes estimate; and plans for Census 2027.
The Board discussed challenges for census staff in the field and the use of technology. On the specific question regarding the timing of the next census, the CSO outlined plans to hold the next Census in 2027, with a five-year gap allowing time for the development of an online response option.
The presentation was followed by a tour of census operations. The Board were very impressed with and appreciative of the presentation and the tour and remarked on the dedication and commitment of all the Census staff. The Board looks forward to the future reports on the Census.
