In its role, defined by the Statistics Act 1993, the NSB is tasked with guiding the broad strategic direction of the Central Statistics Office and the wider Irish Statistical System (ISS) and with establishing priorities for the development of official statistics in Ireland. The key strategy achievement of the NSB over the last twenty years has been the development of a whole-of-system approach to official statistics and to data standards for the Public Sector. Concepts such as the ISS, the ISS Code of Practice, Data Stewardship and the National Data Infrastructure (i.e. the use of unique identifiers and common standards and classification on Public Sector data holdings) have become central themes in the strategic development of Ireland’s official statistics and Public Sector data.
Since the launch of the current NSB Strategy in 2021 and the review of progress undertaken in 2024, significant advances have been made by the CSO and the ISS in delivering the NSB’s strategic priorities and actions including fostering trust and transparency while expanding statistical insights and improving data standards, skills, and services across the civil and public service. At the same time, new issues have emerged, and existing challenges have evolved leading to a need for further consideration of priorities and strategic direction for official statistics and the Irish Statistical System.
The NSB is currently developing a new strategy, due to be launched in 2027, which will cover the five-year period 2027-2032. Stakeholders are asked to consider their emerging issues, themes and challenges and provide feedback to the Board to assist with the development of the strategic plan for official statistics for the next five years.
